Treat Yourself With Kindness

Continuing with the Unstoppable Mindset series, T is for treating yourself in a kind manner.

Most people say things to themselves that they would never allow others to say to them without getting upset.  Things like, “I am fat/lazy/stupid/etc.!”, “you idiot!”, “what in %*%# were you thinking?”, etc.  The list of negative things that we say to ourselves goes on and on….  I am sure that some have come into your mind just from reading this.

When you say unkind things to yourself it creates a variety of issues.  It undermines confidence, lowers self-esteem, causes depressive thoughts, and can halt any progress you are making towards your goals (relationship, health, and career).  What you say to yourself inside of your mind (or say out loud) can impact how you feel.  Would you rather feel bad about yourself or good about yourself?

Treating yourself in a kind manner is crucial to building confidence and self-esteem, and overall feeling good about yourself.   This is especially important when you start something new and want to maintain momentum towards your goal.  Examples of something new can be when you are starting a diet and exercise program to become healthier, starting a new relationship or changing what you do in a current relationship, or when you are wanting to change a career or improve the one you are in currently.

Treating yourself in a kind manner has multiple outcomes. It results in a calmer mind and it allows for mistakes to happen along the way.  Instead of an angry, annoying or quitting response, you take challenges in stride since mistakes allow us to learn and grow.  Allowing for mistakes to occur and learning from them instead of berating yourself over them, leads to a growth mindset.  A growth mindset is what all successful people possess.

One thing that I like to teach people is how to change the words that they use. Imagine how much better you will feel by using more positive words. For example

“That didn’t work out as I planned but I learned …….. from it.”.

“That may not have been the best choice but I can make better choices now and in the future.”.

“I needed to make this mistake in order to move forward.”.

“I am making positive changes in my life that will lead me to what I want.  I don’t need to be perfect in order to move forward.”.

Start paying attention to the words that you use when thinking and speaking.  Be aware of the negative words and consciously change the words to a more positive nature.  You are not going to be perfect at this and that is to be expected.   Embrace the learning process and know that you will get better with this over time.  You will know when the words are more positive because they will feel better.  By being more aware and using more positive words on a more consistent basis, you will notice more positive things happening in your life.

Remember that you are unique and there is no one else in the world like you.  Relish in your uniqueness rather than compare yourself to others.  Comparison can rob us of our joy and is a form of negative self-talk.  We each have different strengths, we can not all be the same.  Start now by being aware of yours and saying kind things to yourself no matter what is going on in your life.

If you struggle with what you say to yourself and others, I encourage you to schedule a 30 minute free consultation so that we can evaluate if we can work well together.
